Keeping your upholstered chaise lounge looking like new can prove to be a not-so-easy thing to do. It is vital to observe regular care if you want to prolong the life of any upholstered furniture. Otherwise, it will have an old, worn-out look as it will not withstand wear and tear and will begin to get experience some discoloration. Luckily, there are a number of cleaning methods that you can do regularly without much effort. Some of these include vacuuming and light brushing, applying topical stain protector, cleaning stains, and repairing the upholstered lounge. Vacuuming or light brushing your lounge everyday removes dirt, dust and food particles that you fail to notice most of the time. These cleaning practices will prevent the setting-in of dirt particles between the fibers of your lounge. If these particles are not removed, they would only cause considerable damage to your lounge in the long run. When vacuuming, it is advisable to place a piece of screen on the vacuum nozzle so that tears and snags in the fabric will be avoided. Applying a topical stain protector will also help maintaining your chaise lounge because it assists in blocking stains, repelling spills and resisting soils.

Thus, it helps keep your lounge looking like new. You must note that these protectors wear off as well, so you need to reapply it every few years. You must also ask your manufacturer first about the appropriate stain protector for your lounge. Remember though, that stain protectors will never help as much as regular care can.

Cleaning Upholstered Chaises

Cleaning stains immediately must be done if you want to take care of your chaise lounge because the longer a stain remains, the harder it will be to remove it. In cleaning stains, the first thing you must do is read the cleaning code and/or cleaning instructions written o the manufacturer’s label. The fabric cleaning codes are W, S, WS, and X.

W means that it must be cleaned with a water-based agent. This applies to man-made fabric such as polyester and nylon. For such fabrics, the best thing to do is spot cleaning using the foam from detergents, mild soaps, non-solvent upholstery cleaners or other water-based cleaners.

S, on the other hand, means that it must be cleaned with mild, water-free cleaning solvents. This applies to fabrics that are made of natural fibers such as linen, silk, cotton and wool. The cleaning agent used must be water-free because if water is used in these types of fabrics, it could result in permanent discoloration.

WS means that is must be cleaned with a mild solvent that can either be water-based or water-free.

X, meanwhile, means that the material must be cleaned only by light brushing or vacuuming. The fabrics that have the X cleaning code will get discolored, stained or destroyed if you use cleaning agents on them like water, mild soap or shampoo.

Once you have determined the cleaning agent that would be best for your chaise lounge, you have to remember some guidelines when removing a stain, spot or spill. First, liquid spills must be attended to immediately. Use a paper towel or a piece of white absorbent cloth and try to remove it. Make sure that you work from the outer edge towards the center of the spill. Otherwise, you will only spread the stain more. Work by gently rubbing the cloth or towel in a circular motion. Be sure to rub gentle enough for the fabric not to snag.

Repairing an Upholstered Chaise Lounge

There are also times when repairing is required. When you need to patch a hole in the fabric, you first have to find and get an excess piece of the material large enough to cover the hole. Make sure to get this piece from a hidden area of the chaise lounge. Then, trim the upholstery so that it matches the hole and the lounge’s surrounding pattern. Apply a fabric adhesive or an iron-on patch to the back of the damaged area. Use these again for installing the material patch to cover the hole.

Make sure that before you begin using the upholstered chaise lounges once more, the adhesive has already dried completely. When you need to patch a tear, on the other hand, you must insert an iron-on patch through it. This way, the sticky side touches the torn fabric’s back side.

Then, keep on ironing one side of the tear until the patch firmly sticks to the back of the cloth located on that side of the upholstered chaise. Adjust the torn are over the patch’s other side for smoothness. Then, iron the patch’s second half, starting from the outer part moving towards the tear. For a stronger bond, you can also use a fabric adhesive.
